Our world is lost to time. Only our myths remain.
Once rain was a symbol of hope and harvest. Now it brings only death.
Humanity survives in sheltered cities and canvas-covered towns. Travel between these patches of safety is rare and dangerous.
It’s what Galahad lives for.
But while seeking a lost cache of salt—a fortune he plans to use to build a shelter over his hometown—Galahad is betrayed by the friends he holds dearest.
They leave him for dead. Unfortunately for them, he lives.
Torn between seeking justice or revenge, Galahad knows one thing for certain: that treasure is his, and he’ll do anything to reclaim it.

Character Q&A
Could you please introduce yourself to our readers?
I go by Galahad, though you wouldn’t be wrong to call me Galen Farrier. I’m a relic hunter. Yes, I know, a dying trade. But it’s not quite dead yet.
What music do you listen to?
We never carry instruments on the road, though one of my companions has the sweetest voice. If you can get her drunk enough to sing, that is.
What are 3 items you can’t live without?
My knife. My jacket. My old copy of Le Morte D’Arthur.
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what is one thing you’d like to have with you?
A waxed tarp, I suppose. Keep the rainwights off me for a while, at least.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
When nobody else correctly packs their bags so they have to borrow my equipment. We’ve been at this for years, is it really so hard to remember to bring a cooking pan?
What do you do in your free time?
I read when there’s light for it.
What makes you want to get out of bed in the morning?
Usually I’m sleeping on the hard ground. It’s not difficult to find the motivation to get up from that.
What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Doesn’t matter. I didn’t end up taking it.
What do you carry in your bag?
The essentials. Rations. Tinder and flint. Usually a book or two, depending how long I expect to be in the wilds.
What’s your favorite animal?
I’ve a horse stabled around here somewhere. Scraggly thing, but he gets me where I need to go. Oh? Favourite kind of animal? I relate to crows, I suppose. Scavengers, all in black. Yes, I think I’ll say the noble crow.
What do you think about Fay?
Good fighter. Better friend. I should have never left her in that den. That was no place for her.
Do you have favorite saying?
My companions would probably tell you it’s, “I have an idea.”
What is your favorite holiday?
It used to be Allhallows, but we rarely make it home in time for autumn.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I’ve always wanted to visit Santan. For the vineyards. Having tasted the stuff they export, I can’t imagine how fine the bottles they keep for themselves must be.
What do you do to relax?
More research. Reading.
What is your favorite food?
The first meal back in civilization after a long trip. Doesn’t matter what it is, that meal’s always the best I’ve ever had.
What is your favorite season?
When winter gets too cold to rain.
How would you define happiness?
Safety.
What are you passionate about?
My family. My home. My friends.
How do you feel about your government?
Never paid much mind to the king. Though I’ve heard talk of rising taxes. Trouble in the north. That doesn’t sit right with me.
If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
To make the rain safe again. That’s all. To stand in the rain without fear.
What’s your biggest secret?
I can’t say. She might read this.
What do you hate?
Liars.
What’s your biggest fear?
Failure. Letting down my parents—and my hometown. A lot of people are counting on me.
What do you think your best quality is?
It’s been said that I’m smart. I don’t know that I’d agree.
How would you describe the world you live in?
Broken. Utterly broken. But beautiful, too.
About the Author

Benjamin Aeveryn is an author of SFF from Cambridge, UK, where he lives with his beautiful fiance and a grumpy old cat. Salt in the Wound is his debut novel. People say his work is grimdark fantasy, but for a vision of England where it’s always raining, infrastructure is crumbling, and nobody trusts their neighbours, he only has to look out of his window.
