Hello and welcome to our cover reveal for Dan Fitzgerald’s forthcoming fantasy romance, Unpainted! I’m super excited to help with the reveal today! I’ve read two of Dan’s books, The Living Waters and The Isle of a Thousand Worlds and I loved them both. If you want to hear my thoughts on them, can read my reviews of each of them here and here, respectively. Before we get into the reveal itself, be sure to take a look at all of the info for the forthcoming book and prepare yourself for your first look at this awesome cover!
Unpainted by Dan Fitzgerald
Series: Weirdwater Confluence (standalone)
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Intended Age Group: Adult
Published: June 30, 2023
Publisher: Dragonheart Press (Self Published)
In the hermetic society of the Painted Faces, pale, unblemished skin is rewarded with station, wealth, and power.
Tera would almost rather go unpainted than enter into an arranged marriage with a total stranger, but that would mean giving up the only life she’s ever known. Not to mention her share of her family’s Pureline fortune.
She’d always thought love was a fairy tale and sex a joyless chore, but the alternative might be worse.
Enter Aven, a soft buttercup of a man, the kindest and most considerate person she’s ever met. A tropical honeymoon awaits, and with the help of her intimacy consultant, Tera is determined to make the best of this awkward ritual. Amid the island breezes, she and her new spouse form a bond neither of them knew they were capable of.
But trouble stirs beneath the polite veneer of the Painted Faces’ society, threatening to tear them—and their entire world—apart.
Unpainted is a queer arranged marriage fantasy romance, a standalone in the Weirdwater Confluence universe. It features a dual POV, magical currency shenanigans, and inordinate amounts of steamy, fluffy goodness with a soft femdom dynamic. Coming June 30, 2023.
And there it is! I really like what Dan has done with this cover and I’m so impressed that he designed and created the cover himself! In the world of the Weirdwater Confluence series, the Painted Faces are named as such because of the vibrant paint they cover their faces with in order to protect the pale, white shade of their skin. I really like how the woman’s face is covered with a mosaic of colors, except for the lower half where her skin appears to be revealed by the swirling light from out of her hand. I don’t know if this is what Dan was going for when he made the cover, but it looks to me as if it represents that intimate moment where her true skin, normally hidden behind thick layers of paint, is revealed in a loving way. I may be attributing meaning to it that isn’t there, but that’s what I take away from it!
As I mentioned in the introduction, I really loved the other two books in the Weirdwater Confluence (especially The Living Waters, which may be a top 10 book of all time for me). I am super excited to return to this world, even if it is by way of a standalone with new characters. The Painted Faces were a super interesting group of people introduced in TLW and I can’t wait to learn more about them! The good thing about Unpainted is that Dan has confirmed that despite returning to an established world, new readers don’t need any prior knowledge to understand and enjoy this new story. So, if your interest has been piqued, feel free to put in a request for an ARC of Unpainted using the form linked above!
About the Author:
I am a fantasy and romance author living in Washington, DC with my wife, twin boys, and two cats. When I am not writing, I might be gardening, doing yoga, cooking, or listening to French music.
I write fantasy in part because the state of the world demands an escape, but also because fantasy provides another lens through which to view what we are living now. Part mirror, part magnifying glass, part prism.
I write romance because we need more love in the world, and sometimes we need to know things will work out in the end. My first published romance will be Wings so Soft, coming in summer 2023.
What you will find in my books: Mystery. Darkness. Wonder. Action. Romance. Otherness examined and deconstructed. Queer and straight characters living and fighting side by side. Imaginary creatures and magic with a realistic touch.
What you won’t find: Extreme violence. Sexual assault. Unquestioned sexism or discrimination. Evil races. Irredeemable villains. Predestined heroes. An ancient darkness that threatens to overspread the land.
