Review: Bared Magic (Woodland Curses #1) by Sara R. Cleveland

Blurb:

The girl with the golden hair…

Siphons are rare creatures, supposedly born of the union of human and fae blood. How she got her ability doesn’t much matter to Wynne; all she knows is it’s a death sentence or worse if the wrong people find out about her gift. It’s too bad she was never very good at minding her own business.

… and the bear who stole her heart

An old curse grows stronger, leaving Callum Bertram sleepless and desperate. He thinks he’s found a temporary solution until a pretty young woman accidentally uses up his sleeping charm. Now, this werebear suddenly finds himself craving something more than a good night’s sleep.

Review:

It’s the Goldilocks and the Three Bears story recreated into an adult fantasy with a bit of romance. (It’s mostly the fade-to-black variety, so not too steamy for those who need to know.)

I loved the different aspects of magic featured. Wynne’s gift was interesting and unique, and I liked that she refused to use it for nefarious purposes. She had a good heart, but didn’t shy away from her ability if it became necessary to use it.

Callum was, pun intended, a big teddy bear. I really enjoyed his sections of the story. And he wasn’t the only werebeast featured—there were far more than bears and wolves in this world. Each variety carried some aspects of their animal-side into their human form as well, which made for some interesting exchanges between them.

There were some nasty villains Wynne and Callum were forced to contend with, some near-miss situations and fights, but in the end, they had a happy ending. This was a really cute, fun read.
