Character Q&A
Orla
Could you please introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi, my name’s Orla! I live in the small town of Ethel, VA. Dave and I have been friends since we were kids but lately it’s seemed like more than friendship. Unfortunately, I can’t touch him otherwise I’ll possess his soul.
What music do you listen to?
Many in Ethel have Irish roots so it’s not uncommon to have bagpipes playing at a get together. I also watch Cormac’s bland play at Shabby Tabby. And, of course, one cannot forget the music at the Festival of Samhain.
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what is one thing you’d like to have with you?
Dave. Okay so that’s not a “thing”, but if I were deserted on an island I think I’d want to be deserted with him. Not only is he good company, the two of us together could charter any waters and perhaps find our way back.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
When people touch me without my permission since it automatically engages my power of possessing souls. I’ve somewhat mastered how to navigate a situation like that, but it’s not without difficulty.
What do you do in your free time?
I enjoy doing puzzles in my free time. Something about being able to solve something in the midst of utter turmoil is soothing. Plus, Molly often joins me and then we do a tarot reading.
What’s your favorite animal?
Dogs are my favorite animal. We have a border collie beagle mix named Boomer. Dave’s tan Labrador, Nessa, holds a special place in my heart too. I love seeing the two of them play on Dave’s land where they can run free.
What is your favorite holiday?
My favorite holiday is Samhain. We hold a celebration full of costumes and lights. It’s a gathering of our kind, those with powers, and full of laughter and companionship.
What do you think about [other MC(s)]?
Molly, my roommate, is the best. She’s half banshee so she gets what it’s like to have to hide a part of yourself from everyone. At least we’re able to do that as a team.
Molly
If you could go anywhere in [the book’s world], where would you go and why?
If I could go anywhere it would be Cormac’s apartment. Or, maybe the Queen’s Chalet where Cormac and I often frequent for privacy. No, the apartment wins. It’s full of Cormac and I paint together. It’s where we do many things together.
What do you do to relax?
Tarot readings with my roommate, Orla. She likes to drink tea to relax. The best is the orange-flavored teas. I like their tangy taste. I also enjoy getting tattoos. It might not seem relaxing to you but it helps me take my mind off of other pain.
What are you passionate about?
Cormac. Cormac’s perfect in my humble opinion. Whether we’re cooking together or working together, Cormac always reads me, well almost always. My attraction is distracting enough, but the thought of losing Cormac renders me useless.
How do you feel about your government?
I prefer the government staying out of my business and I’ll stay out of theirs. It’s not uncommon for those in leadership to judge those with powers. Well, they don’t know we have powers…just that we’re different. Now, the government in the magical world that’s a whole other ballgame. Especially if you’re a halfling like me.
If you could change one thing about [the book’s world], what would it be?
The fishy smell. With the harbor so close and many of the towns citizens working with fish all day it constantly surrounds us. To top it off my roommate, Orla, works with cockles.
What’s your biggest secret?
I’m half banshee. Whoops, guess I’ve already let that slip but the people in the town of Ethel, many of the ones who have known me for a long time do not know. Instead of producing a loud, ringing noise when death is near, I hear it.
What do you think your best quality is?
Loyalty, I’m loyal to a default. There are a few, a select few, who I’d lay down my life for…it’s pretty hard to get into that circle. Orla, for instance, is like a sister to me. I would never let anything happen to her if I could help it.
How would you describe the world you live in?
Well, Orla and I kind of live in our own world with her being a soul possessor and me being half banshee. We have like a secret code and have built something for ourselves here in Ethel surrounded by those we love.
