Character Q&A
Could you please introduce yourself to our readers?
Hello, I’m Derek Draco. I’m a rookie Guardian, meaning I can Change into a dragon and it’s my duty to uphold the peace in Aloseria. I live in the city of Ember with my adoptive father, Darus Flynn, who’s also a Guardian, and our dog and cat.
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what is one thing you’d like to have with you?
Oh, this one’s easy. I’d want to have my ring on me. Because then I could Change into my dragon form and fly off the deserted island.
What makes you want to get out of bed in the morning?
Very little. I’m not a morning person and I like being able to stay in bed for as long as possible. Although I don’t like the idea of Darus pouring a bucket of water on me, so I suppose that’s what gets me out of bed.
What’s your favorite animal?
Cats.
What do you think about Jared and Arabelle?
Jared was the first friend I made when I came to Ember when I was only nine, and he’s stayed my closest friend ever since. Even though he’s a prince, he doesn’t always come across as totally reliable, but really that’s not true at all. He’s someone I can always depend on for anything.
And then there’s Arabelle, she’s Jared’s cousin and I’d say she’s just as loyal and dependable as he is. She’s also clever, strong, and funny. Her eyes are also a really beautiful shade of . . . [Derek cuts off abruptly as his face turns red].
What do you do to relax?
I read or I nap. Sometimes I even train because that’s relaxing to me.
What is your favorite food?
Chocolate pudding. Or anything with chocolate.
What is your favorite season?
Winter. I hate being hot.
How would you define happiness?
The time that I got to spend with my parents in our cottage in the Valley before they died were the happiest moments of my life. When I think of those days, I think that’s what happiness is.
If you could change one thing about Aloseria, what would it be?
As a half-Elf, I think I would change the enmity that still exists between humans and the Wood Elves, even though the war’s been over for years now.
What do you hate?
I hate the man who murdered my parents. And I hate people who think they can take advantage of others.
What do you think your best quality is?
Um, I’m not really sure? I’m honest, I suppose. I’ll just go with that.
