Blurb:
Found as a child by the war-hungry tribe of the Grey Crow, Radok has forged himself a legend as the mighty Wolfeater; a warrior feared by all. Yet even legends can die, and when he finds himself inflicted with a fatal disease, Radok sets out on a quest to face his gods and ask them the one question only gods can answer: what was the meaning of it all?
With him goes Nyana, the blind eight-year-old girl long held in his care, who has her own question for the gods: what next?
They are hunted by friends and enemies alike, some desperate to preserve the natural balance of things, others hungry for revenge. Against them are set a pack of savage cannibals, a blood-thirsty monster, and the servant of a raging god.
But if the pair can do the impossible, if they can touch the Blackstone, it could change the destiny of their people… and with it, the fate of the world.
Review:
This is a book that will take you by storm, a cold white storm that will make you focus solely on it. I had heard some great things and wanted a great standalone fantasy. This one delivers on all counts, creating a world and characters that will completely engross the reader, wanting to know what crazy thing could happen next. It embraces the brutal but makes it real, and shows the actual consequences of such actions. The consequences with the worldbuilding are on full display through every page of this fantastic novel.
The strength of this novel is the world, cold and unforgiving. It is easy to picture and the characters interact with this world in a fabulous way. There are times that the world would actually cause a chill to run down my spine (it is cold). The characters are strong because of this world, the beliefs and actions all influenced in a well thought out manner. There are a few viewpoints that pulled me a little bit out of the flow for a minute or two, but quickly catch their own rhythm to help build out the world.
This is a novel that most fantasy readers will fall in love with. The world is incredible but also very real. There is not a heavy dose of magic, but what is mentioned is also a tease of what else could be. Prepare the supplies, grab the blankets and protect yourself from the cold with a great read that will keep you glued to the pages even after the end has been reached. Highly recommended!!
Thank you for taking the time to read my review. As always, happy reading and Stay Great!!
