Zeroed Out is a cyberpunk thriller set in a fully automated metropolis governed by an all-seeing synthetic intelligence that examines the morality of limiting technological evolution.
While chasing a criminal through an unruly sector of Omega City 6, freelance enforcer Zed Takeda stumbles on the first of many victims by an unknown serial killer that has somehow escaped all forms of the city’s intensive surveillance. His investigation into the murders will uncover some hard truths he had not intended to find.
On the other side of the city, Ash Starbrooke lives as a dreamcaster, or someone whose dreams are turned into highly profitable virtual reality entertainment. She is unaware that the symbols showing up in her nightmares will have her caught up in Zed’s murder investigation.
Their intertwining stories will have them traveling through multiple layers of the neon-drenched, futuristic city filled with street gangs, radical political groups, and social elites
Review:
Disclaimer: I read this as part of SPSFC. This review is my own personal views and does not reflect the opinions of Team Escapist.
A futuristic murder mystery full of action and questions that will keep a reader guessing at what comes next. It is a very visual world, with excellent technology, a world falling apart, and a murder that takes place in a world where crime is instantly recognized. The action starts off fast and furious, immediately building the intrigue that will pull the reader into a fascinating story.
The strength of this novel is the world that is built based on the technology and fears that come from it. It is very visual and comes to life with the lives of the characters living their individual lives. Their different jobs show the vast differences that can exist in each level of this interesting and unique world. The pacing of the novel is excellent at the beginning but does have some jumpy parts towards the end. The mystery is well thought out and intriguing, easily keeping the reader engaged with who it could or what could be going on.
This is a story that will tickle the sci-fi lover with the world while keeping a mystery and thriller that is intriguing through the majority of the book. It has intense action, a desolate world that is easy to imagine, and characters that are interesting to read about. I encourage those who like to figure out puzzles to look into this cyberpunk thriller!
