Review: The Blood of Crows (The Crow’s Gambit #1) by Alex C Pierce

Rating: 8/10

Blurb:

Ren, a state-trained thief working in a world where everyone has magical ability except for him, doesn’t kill people.

Tensions are already high in the walled realm of Lenmar, and when the nobility start dying with no trace of magic that isn’t from the victims, Ren immediately becomes the prime, and only suspect. Hunted by magic-eating Inquisitors and the Captain of the Royal Guard, his life becomes one of flight and fear through a realm on the brink of civil war.

All Ren wants to do is stop a serial killer, clear his name, find his mentor, and protect the people he cares about.

To do that, he’ll have to pull one more high-stakes heist— And steal the proof he needs from the very people who want to catch him.

Review:

This is a heist story that appeals to all kinds of fantasy readers! It has humor, adventure, and a mystery that will keep you glued to the pages (or in my case, headphones) until the very end. It reads very quickly and keeps the intrigue without being repetitive. I was hooked into what was happening and then blown away with the action. It was exciting and kept me wondering what would happen next.

The strength of this novel were the characters. I loved the interaction between Ren and Haim, constantly enjoying the banter that would occur between the two characters. This strength also allows for a quick attachment to the characters, making you care what happens to them as they attempt their heists and adventures. It is an intriguing world, but I look to have it expanded in future installments. The reader is given just enough, but there is the potential to know so much more, allowing them to be fully immersed. The magic was very cool as well and played a huge part in the story that is told.

This is a series and author that I will be keeping on my radar. Heist stories are some of my favorites, and this is one that I will put near the top. Full of not just the humor, but action and peril, as well as sadness at the appropriate times. This book should be talked about, as well as read and recommended. Sit down and let Ren steal your imagination as he sets out on an adventure he didn’t see coming.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review. As always, happy reading and Stay Great!!
