Zeli’s signature pop diva sound and image are nothing short of magical—literally. Her fame comes with hidden costs, a curse that could ruin her voice forever.

Aspiring indie musician, Justin MacKenzie, is determined to kick it to the top of the Rampion Records’ Summer Number One professional vs. amateur singing competition.

The favorite to beat in the annual televised contest is none other than the label’s smoking hot superstar, Zeli, whose crazy extensions flow the length of a football field. Those ridiculous extensions, coupled with her bubblegum brand of pop are an affront to everything Justin loves about music, until a stolen kiss blazes into a romantic encounter.

Once inside Zeli’s world, Justin discovers things are not as they seem. In their quest to allow the real Zeli to step into the spotlight, the pair must confront the mysterious force behind the dazzle of Rampion’s success. If these star-crossed lovers can’t rally their own magic to defeat the darkness, they will lose everything—including each other.

Character Q&A

What music do you listen to?

Justin Time: Indie Rock is the music of the gods.

Zeli: Pop is my gift to the fans.

What are 3 items you can’t live without?

Justin Time: This dude’s got to have the music apps on my phone, a rad parachute rig, and my totally cool rock star
vibe.

Zeli: My treasures are this cherrywood pink guitar, a window that looks onto the stars, and Rampion tea.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what is one thing you’d like to have with you?

Justin Time and Zeli: Our island would have 2 guitars.

Justin: I’m hoping snacks are also involved.

Zeil: And sunscreen.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

Justin Time: I totally don’t get why Zeli sings bubblegum pop crap when she has the voice of a freakin’ goddess.

Zeli: If I have to endure getting one more extension, I’m going to lose it.

What do you do in your free time?

Justin Time and Zeli: We grab any moment to write music.

What makes you want to get out of bed in the morning?

Justin Time: My music dreams are the reason to keep going.

Zeli: The dream that music will bring love into my life blooms fresh every day.

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Justin Time: Best advice: Find synergy with the wind during a B.A.S.E. jump so you don’t end up as pavement art.

Zeli: Cherished advice: Talent is to be shared.

What do you carry in your bag?

Justin Time: This dude doesn’t have a bag. My cell is in my pocket.

Zeli: I’d always carry Ibuprofen because these blasted extensions make my neck sore.

What’s your favorite animal?

Justin Time: I’ve never lived in one place long enough to have a pet, so I’d go with an African Gray parrot that I could teach to sing with me.

Zeli: Oh, meerkats. They’re so perky and always happy. I envy them.

What do you think about [other MC(s)]?

Justin Time: At first, I thought Zeli was a spoiled pop diva brat who could only write and sing music that offends my soul. I was an idiot.

Zeli: I assumed Justin Time was a song-stealing arrogant prick. Oops – not so much.

Do you have favorite saying?

Justin Time: T-shirt moment: Music dreams sucker punch death.

Zeli: When words fail, music speaks.

What is your favorite holiday?

Justin Time: Halloween rocks. There’s always magic in the air.

Zeli: New Year’s Eve because it signals the time of do-overs and new beginnings.

If you could go anywhere in [the book’s world], where would you go and why?

Justin Time: Hollywood is where it’s at, peeps. Don’t ever make me leave.

Zeli: Any isolated beach where the waves sing, and stars are your guiding light.

What do you do to relax?

Justin Time and Zeli: Make music.

What is your favorite food?

Justin Time: A tortilla-busting fully loaded carne asada burrito is my go-to eats.

Zeli: Give me a pink lemonade cake with pink cream cheese frosting and strawberry filling. Oh and sprinkles – tons of pink sprinkles.

What is your favorite season?

Justin Time: I dig a fall day with that first bite of cold zipping through a warm day. It means change is coming. Change rocks with possibility.

Zeli: I love winter because of snowflakes. Someday, I want to go where I could catch a snowflake on my fingertip and taste it. I’ll bet it tastes like magic. Snowflakes avoid Hollywood.

How would you define happiness?

Justin Time: Happiness is living a life dedicated to making and sharing music – any place – any time.

Zeli: Happiness is being free.

What are you passionate about?

Justin Time: I’m mega into writing songs for Zeli’s authentic voice.

Zeli: My passion is writing music that brings happiness and joy to my fans.

How do you feel about your government?

Justin Time: Politics – seriously. Next question.

Zeli: I should pay more attention to government and political stuff.

If you could change one thing about [the book’s world], what would it be?

Justin Time: My world-changer would totally be to create an environment where artists of any kind are able to make a living creating their art.

Zeli: If I had a world changing magic wand, fame would be joyful instead of constricting.

What’s your biggest secret?

Justin Time: Keep it on the down low, but I’m in love with my enemy.

Zeli: Promise not to tell? I want a life away from Papa Gothel, but I’m too afraid to separate.

What do you hate?

Justin Time: It’s rocked my world in a bad way that the star making manager, Grant Gothel, is a monster. Who can you believe in anymore?

Zeli: I hate the lack of choices in my life.

What’s your biggest fear?

Justin Time: My biggest fear is what Gothel will do to Zeli if we can’t spring her from the Rampion Records Tower.

Zeli: My biggest fear is never being in love.

What do you think your best quality is?

Justin Time: My best quality is my cool rock star vibe. I wish my best quality was being less of a jacklick.

Zeli: My best quality is putting my heart into every song I write.

How would you describe the world you live in?

Justin Time: My world has been a harsh place, dude. I’m totally praying that a music career will bring light to chase away the shadows.

Zeli: There’s a glorious world full of stars and fireflies just outside my window. If only I could touch it.

About Justin Gross

Justin is a lover of all things SFF and has been an avid reader since he was three. He is attempting to build the world’s largest private library (not really, but ask his wife and she might agree). Justin is always excited to gush over his favorite reads, which more often than not are also his latest reads. He likes trend toward sweeping epics, with complex characters and even more complex plots. Until recently he was totally against romance, but certain books have shown him that it can be done well. He currently has a love/hate relationship with grimdark.
