Blurb:
What do a stealthy synthetic plant, an eavesdropping sound curtain, and an invisible observer have in common? They are artificial agents working tirelessly in the crime-rife city of Red Calais for their ingenious Master. They wend their way through the cutthroats, cat burglars and con men of the greatest city of the core world called Idona, challenged by numerous obstacles. Yet it seems that their Master hardly notices the chaos his automated minions are creating…
Review:
Disclaimer: I read this book as part of SPSFC. My views do not represent the thoughts of Team Escapist or other judges. They are entirely my own.
This novel started off with a bang, being told from the perspective of three Artificial Intelligence entities that are extremely loyal to their Master. Each has their own agenda, while working on the same project. It was fun and engaging. But I will admit that the middle of the novel and the ending were a lot different than how it began. There were a few chapters that felt like they were the same one over and over again. This may have been intentional, but it distracted me from what I had been enjoying previously.
The strength of the novel to me was the Artificial Characters. They were each unique and well thought out. I grew to like each one for their individual traits and I liked the single minded goal that each of them would demonstrate. As mentioned previously, the pacing of the novel was a little different than to my liking. The ending then felt rushed, but was once again interesting and engaging.
The Created was a clever mix of alien species and technology. It is a fast read and will definitely get the mind thinking about what technology could be used for in the future. It is an enjoyable read, even if it the parts were very distinct in the writing and feel. And once in a while, it might be necessary to check that potted plant that seems to be moving when you’re not watching it.
Thank you for taking the time to read my review. As always, happy reading and Stay Great!!
