To say that Azure Brine is at odds with her father would be an understatement. His recent spiral into the “Humans First” politics of League of Islands’ new governor has strained their once-strong relationship to the breaking point.
Their connection is truly put to the test when her father decides to join the governor’s ship on a voyage to the Capitol Isles for the inauguration. But when Azure learns that the governor has nefarious plans for the islands, and that her father is in mortal danger, she and her best friend (a shit-talking bird named Robin) set out across the archipelago to save him.
Along the way they meet a reanimated skeleton with confidence issues, a group of “pirates errant” who just want to sing and have adventures, and a dragon with an emotional arc.

Character Q&A
What music do you listen to?
Marauder King: Sea Shanties! Or anything else a drunken crew can sing at the top of their lungs together.
What are 3 items you can’t live without?
MK: Probably my fantastic hat with a feather in it, my glorious purple coat, and, as embarrassed as I am to admit it, the bathtub in my captain’s quarters.
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what is one thing you’d like to have with you?
MK: I was stranded on a deserted island one time! All I had was the clothes on my back, a bottle of rum, and my ukulele. That ukulele kept my spirits up, even in the darkest times. I learned to play pretty damned good while I was alone out there. In fact, it was a song I was singing that ultimately alerted a nearby ship to come and rescue me. If I had it to do over again I’d bring a bottle of rum. No one gets rescued from a deserted island twice, and I might as well drink myself into oblivion.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
MK: People who take themselves too seriously! If you’re not going through life with a fun, adventurous spirit, you’re doing it wrong.
What do you do in your free time?
MK: Sing, dance, drink, and be merry.
What makes you want to get out of bed in the morning?
MK: My crew, and the potential for adventure that comes with each new day.
What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?
MK: An old ship’s captain once told me, “There will be those who see your kindness as weakness. Be wary, but never let them kill the kindness in you. It isn’t weakness. You’ll just have to trust me on that.”
What do you carry in your bag?
MK: Rum. And a few cups should I have company.
What’s your favorite animal?
MK: Capybaras, of course! No sane captain would sail a ship without at least one on board. On the Adventure Ship, we have two, Mrs. Eleanor Covington and her husband, Alistair. They are pretty much royalty around here.
What do you think about Azure?
MK: She’s wonderful! So smart, and such a natural when it comes to nautical tactics. Truth be told, I think she’d make a better captain than me. She’s also funny and kind, a natural Marauder to be sure!
Do you have a favorite saying?
MK: “Longing for adventure is the most natural thing in the world.” I don’t know if that counts, but it’s a refrain I often find myself repeating.
What is your favorite holiday?
MK: It’s not an official holiday, but we Marauders celebrate the anniversary of the day we tried to rob a merchant ship at sea. It was an absolute disaster that almost got us killed, but we like to celebrate it so we’re reminded of who we almost were, and who we chose to be instead. We call it Half Ass Day, for reasons I won’t get into right now.
If you could go anywhere in the League of Islands, where would you go and why?
MK: Dragon Island! The mystery of it is so damn compelling to me. It would be our greatest adventure yet!
What do you do to relax?
MK: Sip rum and listen to my fellow Marauders sing songs on a calm night at sea. That’s what it’s all about.
What is your favorite food?
MK: Faun food is fantastic. The latest plate of faun food I’ve had is always my current favorite. But if I had to pick one, it would probably be nacias. Chips, cheese, and that spicy seasoned chicken. Delicious!
What is your favorite season?
MK: There aren’t too many seasons on the isles. I have heard about summer and winter and all that back on the Continent, but who knows how accurate those stories are?
How would you define happiness?
MK: Having love, fun, and adventure in your life.
What are you passionate about?
MK: Sailing, treasure, music, and general adventure. Also Chastity, there is no maiden fairer. I quest in her name, in deference to her virtue, always.
How do you feel about your government?
MK: I’m mostly indifferent to politics. But even I know that our new governor, Reginald Pratt, needs to go. He’s a bigot, and such things cannot be tolerated.
If you could change one thing about the League of Islands, what would it be?
MK: It would be really great if there was a lot more hidden treasure around the islands. I mean, who doesn’t love hidden treasure?
What’s your biggest secret?
MK: Well, I kind of spilled it already, but it’s probably the fact that I have a bathtub in my quarters. We Marauders like to stay relatively clean. And there’s nothing quite like a warm bath on a cool night. If you’re wondering how we warm it, we use faun magic. Pretty cool, right? Just don’t tell anyone. We don’t want our reputation to be totally tame, ya know?
What do you hate?
MK: I try not to. But if I had to pick one thing, it would be injustice.
What’s your biggest fear?
MK: Captain Roberts. He’s an actual pirate who sails these same seas. I hope we NEVER have a confrontation with him…
What do you think your best quality is?
MK: My attitude of inclusion and acceptance. I will welcome absolutely anyone aboard my ship, unless they’re assholes.
How would you describe the world you live in?
MK: It’s a Paradise. An achingly beautiful world bursting with the potential for love and adventure!
