So when Lady Adallia Pahame hires him to find her own lost love, Kaernan assumes it will be an easy, routine commission.
But when the mystery surrounding his new traveling companion causes them to run afoul of an infamous gang of bounty hunters, Kaernan realizes this is one commission he might not return from. Will he be able to uncover the truth in time to save his friends — and himself?
Heir of Memory and Shadow is the second book in the Kingdom Legacy series.

Character Q&A
What music do you listen to?
Kaernan Asthore: Dashboard Confessional, My Chemical Romance, Panic! At the Disco. And jazz.
What are 3 items you can’t live without?
KA: My sword, my sanity, and my sister. Seriously, I’d be lost without her.
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what is one thing you’d like to have with you?
KA: I would LOVE to be stranded on a deserted island. Seriously, how do I sign up for that? I can’t think of many things I’d want to have with me, I’m a pretty resourceful person since I travel so much. Probably a good book to help pass the time. Just NOT a romance novel.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
KA: I really hate it when my clients don’t listen to me. I mean, you hired me for a reason. Trust my judgement, please.
What do you do in your free time?
KA: Free time? What’s that? … Usually, when I’m home and not on the road, I’m hiding from my father.
What makes you want to get out of bed in the morning?
KA: My twin sister Kaela. Mostly because if I try to stay in bed too long she’ll come in and make me get up.
What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?
KA: That my cursed talents should actually be considered a gift. I suppose in a certain light, that’s true, but they’ve never felt much like a “gift” to me.
What do you carry in your bag?
KA: Mostly practical stuff – a token of my client’s beloved to help aid in the search, rations and money for the road. I also carry a miniature portrait of my family.
What’s your favorite animal?
KA: Snakes, because I can relate. You need a certain amount of savvy and cunning in my line of work, just as snakes have. But we’re both terribly misunderstood creatures.
What do you think about [other MC(s)]?
KA: Hmm… they’re an interesting bunch. I try not to get too attached to my patrons, because that is just asking for eventual trouble. But Lady Pahame is a sharp one; even though she’s looking for her lost love, I don’t think there’s much she misses. Her daughter Delphine is a much simpler creature, sweet and a constant ray of sunshine. It could honestly get annoying if she wasn’t so kind and sincere to boot. My hired team, Rhyss and Farrah, are hard-working, yet funny. They fight like an old married couple, which I guess makes sense since they’ve known each other so long. At least they keep our travels lively.
Do you have favorite saying?
KA: “Let sleeping dogs lie.” If people followed that thought, then I’d be out of a job — but I’d also probably be a lot happier.
What is your favorite holiday?
KA: I can tell you what it’s NOT. It’s NOT Valentine’s Day.
If you could go anywhere in [the book’s world], where would you go and why?
KA: My travels have taken me to many places, but I’ve never been as far south as Annlyn. I’ve always been curious about that country, it sounds so exotic. And the jewelry they create down there is absolutely stunning. I’ve never seen anything comparable anywhere else in the Gifted Lands.
What do you do to relax?
KA: I’m an introvert at heart, so spending time alone is how I relax and recharge.
What is your favorite food?
KA: Our cook at Asthore Manor makes a wonderful strawberry compote.
What is your favorite season?
KA: Winter. I don’t get as many commission requests then, due to the fact that it’s harder to travel during the winter, and that makes me very, very happy.
How would you define happiness?
KA: From my experience as a Seeker, I would say happiness is accepting things as they are, instead of wishing for something else or trying to change things.
What are you passionate about?
KA: I’ll be honest, being a Seeker with my unique gifting has made me rather jaded. Maybe I’m passionate about cynicism? But when you meet good people who are willing to chip away at that cynicism, they teach you to be passionate about the right things, the things that truly matter.
How do you feel about your government?
KA: I respect our king and queen, just like any other citizen of Orchwell should. My family, the Asthores, have a closer working relationship with the royal family than most, as the royals have hired us on various occasions to find matches for them.
If you could change one thing about [the book’s world], what would it be?
KA: For Seekers, very often children inherit their parents’ abilities. While that seems like it would make the lives easier for all future generations, I am living proof that that is not necessarily true. I do sometimes wonder what it would be like if children could choose whether or not they wanted to be Seekers. Or if they could become Seekers, but choose what they would want to specialize in. I’ve always hated not having a choice about it.
What’s your biggest secret?
KA: I hate my job. It’s something you’re born into, and it’s a bit of an inherited condition, but man, I really, really hate it.
What do you hate?
KA: See above — my job. Or is it my calling? Either way, I hate it.
What’s your biggest fear?
KA: My biggest fear has already come true — that I will take on a commission that gets out of hand, I won’t be able to help my patron before they go mad. It’s my worst fear, and my biggest regret. And I relive it daily.
What do you think your best quality is?
KA: I’m a very good listener. When your job is to seek out someone’s lost love, you learn to keep your mouth shut and just listen to what they have to say. I’m part Seeker, part unwitting therapist.
How would you describe the world you live in?
KA: The Gifted Lands are amazing, with each country having a speciality and rich history all their own. My home country, Orchwell, is known as the Land of Seekers. Those who have the Seeker gift are able to search out or locate certain things or people, depending on their gift. Since Seekers are so highly sought for their services, it can make a person’s fortune if you’ve that ability. But the gift can also drive a Seeker insane, if used improperly, or not used at all.
