Review: Paladin Unbound (Archives of Evelium #1) by Jeffrey Speight

Rating: 7/10

Blurb:

The last of a dying breed, a holy warrior must rise up against a growing darkness in Evelium.
The most unlikely of heroes, a lowly itinerant mercenary, Umhra the Peacebreaker is shunned by society for his mongrel half-Orc blood. Desperate to find work for himself and his band of fighters, Umhra agrees to help solve a rash of mysterious disappearances, but uncovers a larger, more insidious plot to overthrow the natural order of Evelium in the process.
As Umhra journeys into the depths of Telsidor’s Keep to search for the missing, he confronts an ancient evil and, after suffering a great loss, turns to the god he disavowed for help.
Compelled to save the kingdom he loves, can he defeat the enemy while protecting his true identity, or must he risk everything?

Review:

Paladin Unbound is an action packed fantasy adventure! It follows a group of heroes as they traverse the land of Evelium in their quest to save their world from the evil that is brewing on the horizon. It is straight forward, taking you from action sequence to action sequence. It has all manner of heroes, promising to have one that will connect with a reader. The action is fun and brutal, making the book read at a very fast pace.

Paladin Unbound has several characters in a sprawling world, but I was hoping for a little more world building. There is a lot of potential for it and I look forward to what the author will do in this world in future installments. The strength of this book is the variety of characters that it introduces, but we do not get a lot of time with any of them because of this same variety. The monsters and threats that are faced make it fun and thrilling to read.

I enjoyed the read and know that it is a perfect fit for those who are looking for a light fantasy adventure that is full of fun action sequences that are both brutal and heart pounding. It has the perfect hero that represents everything that is good and that many can cheer for. It will definitely be one that will resound in the hearts of many as they secretly pray to become a Paladin!
