Kari, a young wolf demon, learns her parents’ isolation is justified when they’re killed by humans from the village near their mountain home—humans who found them because of Kari’s carelessness. With her dying breath, Kari’s mother orders her to shift into human form so that the humans might spare her. Kari allows herself to be rescued from the snowy woods, vowing to seek revenge one day.
As she grows older and stronger, Kari befriends Kiki, a village outcast who accepts Kari for who she truly is and what she’s vowed to do. The girls plan to see the world together once Kari can fulfill her need for vengeance…but destiny has another plan in mind.

Character Q&A
What music do you listen to?
Music…? Kari waves a hand Whatever the bards play in town?
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what is one thing you’d like to have with you?
In a situation like that, it’d be nice to have my friend Kiki with me. I could get my own food, but I’d hate to be alone.
What do you do in your free time?
Train. I have a lot of practice to do!
What makes you want to get out of bed in the morning?
The things I need to get done. I can’t rest, not now.
What do you carry in your bag?
A waterskin and some clothes for when I…change forms.
What is your favorite holiday?
The winter festivals in Snow Shade aren’t bad. The traders come from around the world and bring all sorts of strange things.
If you could go anywhere in [the book’s world], where would you go and why?
I’d cross the Demon Sea and go to Kestos! I’m sure I could see a lot of amazing things there.
What do you do to relax?
Just being in the woods helps me calm down, even after a hard day.
What is your favorite food?
I love chicken, when I can get it.
What is your favorite season?
I love the cold months. That’s when the morthiem lilies wake up!
How would you define happiness?
I think happiness is as simple as being with those who love you.
What are you passionate about?
I care most about those closest to me. I don’t want to lose anyone else.
How do you feel about your government?
Human lords. Kari scoffs They think they know everything and rule everyone, but they’re just foolish humans.
If you could change one thing about [the book’s world], what would it be?
I’d change the humans’ prejudice. Not all demons want to hurt them! And if they do, maybe they deserve it.
What’s your biggest secret?
Kari laughs If I told you that, it wouldn’t be much of a secret. I don’t have much, and I’d rather keep what’s left.
What do you hate?
Those damn humans. Not all of them, but…there’re so many willing to hurt others for no reason.
What’s your biggest fear?
Losing more of my loved ones.
How would you describe the world you live in?
The world is unfair, but there’s a lot to find and love if you look in the right places.
