The Guardians are the protectors of Aloseria. They are the keepers of the peace and they have a unique ability–they can turn into dragons. Derek Draco is one of them. Haunted by the memories of his past, Derek comes across a piece of a mythical amulet, said to hold the power to grant wishes once all three pieces are brought together. Seeing an opportunity to right the wrongs of his past, Derek sets out on a journey to find the rest of the amulet, along with his friends, Jared and Arabelle. However, Derek is unaware of the true power of the amulet and using it to fulfil his seemingly innocent wish could have disastrous consequences.

Author Q&A

Thank you so much for joining us for this short Q&A! Before we get going, please tell us a bit about yourself.

Hey, thanks for having me. I’m a self-published fantasy author who lives in Australia. When I’m not writing or daydreaming about my characters, you can probably find me with my nose in a book, drawing, playing video games or serenading my dog and cat with songs about how much I love them.

I want to start things off by asking: what is a great book that you’ve read recently and why should we give it a go?

One that comes to mind is The Boy Who Steals Houses by C.G. Drews. It’s a fun and compelling read with plenty of characters that will steal your heart.

Do you usually write to background noise, music, etc. or do you prefer silence?

I typically prefer to listen to music while I write, particularly instrumentals, since music with lyrics will most likely distract me. I mostly listen to movie/TV show/video game soundtracks, such as The Lord of the Rings and The Witcher.

What made you want to write in Fantasy? Do you write (or plan to write) in any other genres?

I can’t pinpoint what started it, but I’ve always loved and been very intrigued by fantasy. I do have plans to write outside of fantasy in the future. I have a very vague idea for a horror/sci-fi book that was partially inspired by the Dead Space games. I’d also like to try writing steampunk as well.

Who are your favorite current writers and who are your greatest influences?

V.E. Schwab and C.S. Pacat are two writers I really look up to and my biggest influences would have to be my fellow indie authors. They’re always inspiring me with their own amazing stories.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’d like to think I’m a healthy dose of both.

For those who haven’t read Amulet of Wishes, give us the elevator pitch.

So Amulet of Wishes is about this boy, Derek, who’s a Guardian, so he’s able to turn into a dragon. One night, he discovers the existence of this amulet that can supposedly grant wishes when all three pieces are brought together. He decides to go on this quest to find the amulet and right the wrongs of his past, only he’s not the only one looking for it and he doesn’t realise that this amulet may not be quite what it seems.

What can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you?

I’ve just finished Lady Night, the sequel to Amulet of Wishes and I’m hoping to release it later this year. I also have another short story, Darus’s Story, that I’ll be publishing before Lady Night‘s release.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer a few questions for us! I always enjoy this little peek behind the curtain.

Now Rita spends a lot of her writing time working on her YA fantasy series, Chronicles of the Guardians.
